Water Damaged Drywall Repair in Phoenix

Wet drywall doesn’t just stain. The board softens, holds moisture inside the wall, and can hide mold behind the paint long after the surface looks dry.
Restore Master repairs water damaged drywall across the Phoenix Valley. We measure the moisture, dry what can be dried, replace what can’t, and match the texture and paint so the repair doesn’t show.
Does Wet Drywall Need to Be Replaced?
Not always. Drywall is a chalky core wrapped in paper, and a brief soaking rarely hurts it, so board that dries fast and stays firm can usually stay. The trouble starts when it stays wet. After a few days the core softens, the paper pulls away, and the board sags or gives when you press on it, so it has to come out. Drywall that soaked up dirty water, like a sewer backup or storm runoff, should be replaced rather than dried.
A quick look can’t tell you which one you have. That’s what our inspection is for. Moisture meters and infrared cameras show how far the water traveled, including spots that look dry on the surface, so we know what stays and what goes.
Signs of Water Damaged Drywall
Water soaks the inside of a wall before it shows, so watch for these signs:
- A yellow or brown stain that grows or comes back after painting
- Paint that bubbles, peels, or flakes
- A spot that feels soft or spongy when you press on it
- Baseboards that warp, swell, or pull away from the wall
- A musty smell in one room with no clear cause
The wet area is usually wider than the stain.
How We Repair It
The repair starts with the water, not the wall. If a pipe or roof is leaking, we bring in a trusted plumbing or roofing partner to fix it. With the source stopped, we map the moisture, set up air movers and dehumidifiers, and keep testing until the wall reads dry.
Board that can’t be saved gets cut out, back past the wet area and guided by the meter readings, so no damp drywall is left behind. Wet insulation comes out too, and the studs and framing get checked and dried before we close the wall.
Then we rebuild: new drywall cut to fit and screwed to the framing, seams taped and finished, and texture, primer, and paint so the patch blends in. A leak from above often damages the ceiling too, which our ceiling leak repair page covers.
Will the Patch Show?
Not if the texture matches. Most Phoenix-area homes have textured walls, usually orange peel or knockdown, and a flat patch stands out across the room. That’s why we do drywall, texture, and painting in-house: the crew that opens the wall also blends the texture and paints to match.
